Status
This promise is in progress. As part of the 2022-23 Scottish Budget, the Scottish Government announced continued funding for upgrades to the women’s estate as part of a larger package of capital funding for the Scottish Prison Service. In July 2022, a new women’s custodial unit named the Bella Centre opened in Dundee with space for 16 offenders, aiming to integrate inmates more closely with the community. More facilities of this kind are due to open in future and the existing women’s prison, HMP Cornton Vale, will also be replaced.
